Pooling resources to accelerate decarbonisation of heating and cooling needs

Four Horizon 2020 projects – Heat Roadmap Europe (HRE), Hotmaps, Planheat and Thermos – discussed ground-breaking modelling tools 

for heating and cooling planning during an interactive workshop organised in Denmark. The workshop emphasised the importance of research, innovation and demonstration projects for thermal planning tools.

The workshop took place on 12 November at Aalborg University, in Denmark. It brought together academics and researchers as well as industry and public sector representatives in order to assess four H2020 projects that are developing ground-breaking tools for energy planning. Each of them works on a different approach to optimise thermal mapping / modelling tools, thereby enabling faster upgrade, refurbishment and expansion of existing systems, as well as increased deployment of renewable sources and the potential of waste/excess heat.

The goal of Heat Roadmap Europe 4 (HRE4) is to develop low-carbon heating and cooling strategies, called Heat Roadmaps for 14 EU Member States.

The Hotmaps project is working on a toolbox that supports local, regional and national heating and cooling planning processes.

The Planheat project develops a simulation tool through which cities can map, plan and identify low-carbon, economically-viable heating scenarios.

The Thermos project provides methodologies, software and modelling tools that allow public authorities to plan, develop, and expand heating and cooling systems more quickly and efficiently.

The workshop proved to be an effective way to disseminate new research-based knowledge and methodologies. It effectively contributed to the heating and cooling decarbonisation debate.
